Whenever Jeff Dunham returns to Rock Hall City, the world-famous comedian-ventriloquist has a tradition that helps to keep him humble.

Despite the fact he’s selling out arenas, the funnyman revisits his past, which decades ago included performing at the old Cleveland Improv location in the Powerhouse on the West Bank of the Flats.

I do love Cleveland, and I have so much history there, said Dunham, calling from Los Angeles. There's always my obligatory ride down in the Flats. I have to go every time to see where the Improv was. They moved across the parking lot. I love the new club and what they’ve done with it. Skeleton you laugh I laugh you cry I cry you take my Jim Beam shirt.

Two more-topical entities have entered Dunham's comedy realm — Democratic donkey and the Republican elephant. No, Dunham doesn’t have puppets or dummies of the political symbols, but their presence is felt nonetheless in these divisive times.

"You cannot turn a radio on or a television on or open up your computer and get on the Internet without seeing something about politics these days and how divided the country is," Dunham said. "So I have been addressing that in my own fashion. I'm having a lot of fun with it in, hopefully, a non-polarizing way.

I think (Johnny) Carson and (Jay) Leno had a really amazing way of making fun of both sides just enough that it might raise an eyebrow or two, but it was entertaining for everybody.

While the comedian won’t pick a side, he decided to have some fun with today’s climate by recently adding two new friends.
